The Witches is an adaptation of the 1983 Roald Dahl book. It about a kid and his grandmother who gets caught up in dastardly plans of a group of child-hating witches. Director and co-writer Robert Zemekis has converted the setting to 1960s Alabama.
Robert Zemeckis’s “The Witches” is one of the movies in the Halloween genre. It starts out fairly normally, with Chris Rock narrating the story of a little boy named Hero. His parents die in a car crash, and then he goes to live with his grandmother. Very quickly, though, things get peculiar. They realize that there are witches who are scheming to turn all children into mice. Things go wrong when Hero and his new friend Bruno become goals of the witches.
The Witches is the best movie to watch this time
The best parts of the film are its characters. Jahzir Bruno’s Hero is unbelievably sweet and cuteness. Octavia Spencer takes on the role of slightly crazy, and Anne Hathaway steals the show. Someone think Anne Hathaway’s accent is too distracting and there are, of course, going to be haters of this film.
It’s important that this is a Roald Dahl plot turned into a kids movie. His novels are always at least a smidgen past strange. The kids movies are meant to be fun, lighthearted and happy. They’re attracted to draw kids’ attention with their bright colors and sadistic villains.
Even though the plot is about witches, the movie isn’t overtly Halloweenish. That being said, the thread of Halloween in its plot and characters makes it a movie definitely worth watching this time of year.
